Skincare for Men

Four products, two minutes a day, actual results. The routine that covers 90% of men's skin needs—with one ingredient that makes the biggest difference.

The four-step men's routine

This works for most men. Add complexity only when you have a specific issue the basics aren't solving.

Step 1: Cleanser

Once daily (morning or evening—not both unless you exercise). Gel cleanser for oily or acne-prone skin, cream cleanser for dry or normal. Don't use bar soap on your face.

Step 2: Moisturizer + SPF

A lightweight moisturizer with SPF 30+ every morning. If you dislike the feel: apply a thin hydrating moisturizer first, let it absorb, then a separate SPF. Non-negotiable for long-term skin health.

Step 3: Retinoid (evening)

Adapalene 0.1% (Differin, OTC) or tretinoin (prescription). Start 2x/week to build tolerance. This is the single highest-impact ingredient for aging, texture, pores, and acne. Results at 3–6 months.

Step 4: Benzoyl Peroxide (if needed)

2.5–5% for active acne. Use in the morning, retinoid at night. Kills C. acnes bacteria and reduces inflammatory lesions faster than most alternatives.

Shaving and skin

Daily shaving is a physical exfoliant that can irritate the skin barrier and worsen ingrown hairs. Shave with the grain on sensitive areas, use a sharp blade (dull blades cause more friction), and apply moisturizer immediately after. If razor bumps are persistent, consider switching to an electric razor or using a chemical exfoliant (BHA/salicylic acid) on affected areas before shaving.

Frequently asked

Do men need a skincare routine?

Men's skin is on average 25% thicker, oilier, and ages differently than women's (later onset, more pronounced later). The thicker skin tolerates actives better; the oiliness means acne is more common. A basic routine—cleanser, retinoid, SPF—prevents the most common issues without requiring a 10-step morning ritual.

What skincare products do men actually need?

Four products cover 90% of male skin needs: a gentle cleanser (removes oil without stripping), moisturizer with SPF (or separate moisturizer + sunscreen), retinol or adapalene (for aging, texture, acne—the highest-ROI ingredient), and benzoyl peroxide (if acne is a concern). Everything else is optional.

Is sunscreen necessary for men?

Yes. UV exposure is the primary driver of skin aging and a significant acne hyperpigmentation prolonger. Men are historically less likely to use SPF and show earlier UV-related aging as a result. SPF 30+ every morning takes 10 seconds and is the highest-impact skin investment available without a prescription.

What is the best skincare for men with oily skin?

For oily skin: a foaming or gel cleanser (not a bar soap), a lightweight water-based moisturizer, adapalene 0.1% (regulates sebum production over 3–4 months of use), and a matte-finish SPF. Avoid heavy creams and oils that sit on top of skin rather than absorbing.
