What is my face shape?
Most face shape quizzes give you a different answer every time you take them because they ask you to eyeball your own mirror reflection. Here is how to read your real shape from four objective proportions.
The 4 numbers that determine your face shape
Instead of guessing in the mirror, geometric face-shape analysis measures three horizontal widths against one vertical length:
1. Length-to-Width Ratio
Face height (hairline to menton) divided by bizygomatic cheekbone width. Around 1.30–1.35 reads compact (Round or Square) - 1.38–1.48 reads balanced (Oval, Heart, Diamond) - 1.50+ reads elongated (Oblong).
2. Forehead-to-Cheekbone Ratio
Separates Heart and Oblong faces (where the upper third stays broad) from Diamond and Triangle faces (where the forehead narrows relative to the midface or jaw).
3. Jaw-to-Cheekbone Taper
How sharply the lower third narrows from the cheekbones to the gonion and chin. A wide, straight jaw creates a Square or Oblong base - a steep taper creates Heart or Diamond.
4. Chin & Jawline Contour
Whether the lower border curves softly (Round, Oval), turns at a crisp gonial angle (Square), or converges to a defined point (Heart, Diamond).
How to take an accurate photo for a face shape test
Phone cameras held twelve inches from your nose exaggerate the center of your face and make your jaw and temples look narrower than they really are - turning Square and Oval faces into false Heart or Oblong reads.
Hold the camera at least arm's length away (or use a 2x portrait lens), keep the lens strictly at eye level, pull hair off your forehead and temples, and keep your teeth lightly together with a neutral expression.
Using your face shape once you know it
Your face shape isn't an attractiveness score - every shape has high-harmony faces. Its real value is practical: choosing haircuts that balance your vertical thirds, picking glasses frames that contrast your angles, and shaping beard or brow lines that flatter your jaw taper.
Glasses are the quickest win, because a frame either repeats your dominant lines or counters them: angular frames lengthen a round face, curved frames soften a square jaw, top-heavy frames balance a wide jaw. We've written the frame rules for all seven shapes - and how your eye spacing and brow line change the pick - in a separate guide.

Frequently asked
How can I tell my face shape from a photo?
Take a front-facing photo at eye level from arm's length or further (to avoid wide-angle selfie distortion) with your hair pulled back from your temples and forehead. Compare four measurements: forehead width between the temples, cheekbone width across the arches, jaw width at the gonial angles, and total face length from hairline to chin. The ratio of length to width and which of the three horizontal widths dominates defines your shape.
What if I'm between two face shapes?
Most people are. Face shapes are seven named regions on a continuous geometric grid, not rigid boxes. It is completely normal to be a primary Oval with a Square secondary tendency (balanced length, but a stronger jaw taper), or a Round-to-Heart blend. Styling works best when you account for both your primary classification and your secondary tendency.
Why does the mirror test fail?
Tracing your face on a bathroom mirror introduces parallax error every time you move your head an inch, and most people trace inside their hair rather than along the actual skeletal outline. Measuring the three widths on a properly lit, eye-level photo is far more repeatable.
Does losing or gaining weight change my face shape?
Your underlying bone structure (cheekbone width, jaw width, facial length) stays constant in adulthood, but soft tissue over the buccal and submental areas changes the visible silhouette. Higher body fat shifts Square, Oval, and Heart faces toward Round - leaning out reveals the underlying angularity and jaw taper.
