The seven face shapes

Every face-shape system reduces to three widths plus length. The shapes are just the recognisable combinations - no shape ranks above another, and most faces sit between two.

Oval

Cheekbones widest, jaw tapers gently, length comfortably exceeds width. The shape most systems treat as the neutral baseline - it carries almost any cut.

Round

Length and width close, soft angles, fullest at the cheeks. Height on top and tighter sides add the length the shape lacks.

Square

Jaw nearly as wide as the cheekbones with an angular border, length close to width. Texture and softness balance the strong lines.

Oblong

Clearly longer than wide with fairly even widths. Often mistaken for oval - the tell is the length. Side volume helps - more height doesn't.

Heart

Forehead or cheekbones widest, tapering to a narrow or pointed chin. Volume near the jaw and a softer fringe bring the balance back.

Diamond

Cheekbones clearly the widest point, with a narrower forehead and a narrower, often pointed jaw. Fullness at the forehead or chin evens it out.

Triangle

Jaw wider than the forehead - sometimes called pear. Volume above the ears and at the temples widens the top to match.

What the analysis reads

The three widths

Forehead at the hairline, cheekbones at the widest point of the midface, and jaw at the angles - which one is widest, and how far the others fall off it, is what separates oval from heart from triangle.

Length to width

Face length from hairline to chin against cheekbone width. Compact reads round or square - long reads oblong - balanced is where oval and diamond live.

Jaw character

Soft, tapered or angular - the detail that separates round from square, and oval from oblong, when the widths alone are close.

FAQ

How do I find out my face shape?

Upload one front-facing photo with your hair off your face and the tool reads the three widths every face-shape system uses - forehead, cheekbones and jaw - plus your face length, then classifies you as Oval, Round, Square, Oblong, Heart, Diamond or Triangle. You also get a match percentage and the runner-up shape, because most faces sit between two categories and an honest answer says so.

Is the face shape detector free?

Yes. Your face shape, match percentage, runner-up shape, one-line headline and the three proportion reads are free with no account or payment. The styling playbook - the named haircuts, glasses frames, facial hair or contouring that balance your shape, your most flattering camera angle, and what to avoid - is a one-time promotional unlock shown at checkout. No subscription.

What is the most attractive face shape?

There isn't one. Every shape includes strikingly attractive faces - what people actually respond to is harmony, definition, skin and proportion - traits that cut across every category. Oval gets called 'ideal' mostly because it is the most versatile for hairstyles, which is a styling fact, not a beauty ranking. This tool never ranks shapes or scores attractiveness.

Why do face shape quizzes give me different answers?

Because most faces sit between categories, and quizzes rely on self-perception rather than measurement. Add hair covering the hairline, a low camera angle widening the jaw, or a close-up lens bulging the midface, and inconsistent results are the expected outcome. This tool reads the actual widths from your photo, tells you how cleanly you fit the shape, and names the runner-up - so a borderline result is reported as borderline.

What haircut suits my face shape?

The principle behind every chart is to add what the shape lacks: height and tighter sides for round, side volume rather than height for oblong, texture and softness for square, volume near the jaw for heart, fullness at the forehead or chin for diamond. The playbook names specific cuts for your shape AND the hair in your photo. For a ranked list with the exact brief to give your barber or stylist, run the Hairstyle Finder next.

What photo gives the best result?

Front-facing, at eye level, from arm's length or further, in even light, with your hair pulled off your forehead and ears and a neutral expression. Hair over the hairline hides the true forehead width and a low or close camera distorts the jaw and midface - the tool lowers its confidence and tells you when a photo was hard to read.

Can my face shape change?

The bone doesn't change in adulthood, but how the shape reads can: facial fat pushes every shape towards round, and ageing redistributes soft tissue. Hairstyle, facial hair, glasses and camera angle change the impression most of all - which is exactly what the playbook works with. This tool never suggests any procedure.

Is my photo kept private?

Yes. Your photo is used in memory to generate your result and then discarded - it's never stored, sold, or used to train models. No signup is needed for the free result or the paid playbook.
