How Symmetric Is My Face?
What AI symmetry analysis measures, what normal scores look like, and the honest truth about how much symmetry actually affects attractiveness.
What AI symmetry analysis actually measures
A face symmetry tool maps corresponding landmark pairs across the vertical midline and measures their deviation from perfect bilateral symmetry. Key landmark pairs include:
Eye corners
Medial and lateral canthi—left vs right position, height, and tilt relative to the midline.
Brow peaks and arches
Peak height, arch shape, and inner/outer corner alignment on both sides.
Nostril bases
Width and vertical position of each nostril base point.
Lip corners
Height and horizontal distance of the mouth corners from the midline.
Jawline landmarks
Gonion (jaw angle) and chin deviation from the vertical midline.
How to interpret your score honestly
A score of 80–90 is genuinely normal and within the attractive range. A score below 70 indicates visible asymmetry worth understanding. A score above 90 is exceptional but, as noted, does not correlate as strongly with attractiveness as commonly assumed.
More important than the overall score is which landmarks are most asymmetric—an off-center chin reads very differently from a slightly different brow height. The breakdown tells you more than the aggregate.
Frequently asked
How do I measure my face symmetry?
AI face symmetry tools measure the distance between corresponding left-right landmarks (eye corners, nostril bases, lip corners, brow peaks) and compare them as ratios. A perfect score of 100 would mean every paired landmark is equidistant from the midline. Most people score between 70–90; scores above 90 are rare.
Is facial asymmetry normal?
Yes—mild facial asymmetry is universal. Both sides of the face develop from different cell populations and are rarely geometrically identical. Research shows that perfect bilateral symmetry actually looks uncanny to human observers. The slight imperfection of natural asymmetry reads as more 'alive.'
How much does facial symmetry affect attractiveness?
The attractiveness effect of symmetry is real but often overstated. Research shows symmetry correlates with attractiveness ratings at around r=0.1–0.2—a modest relationship. Other factors (dimorphism, harmony, feature quality, expression) have larger effects. High symmetry with average features does not outperform low symmetry with exceptional features.
Can you fix facial asymmetry?
Minor asymmetry cannot and should not be fixed—it's normal and doesn't meaningfully affect attractiveness. Significant asymmetry resulting from malocclusion or structural jaw issues can be addressed by orthognathic surgery. Asymmetric jaw development (often from sleeping on one side) can be reduced by changing sleep position and posture habits.
