What is the Norwood scale?
The Norwood (Hamilton-Norwood) scale is the standard classification of male-pattern hair loss, running from NW1 (a juvenile hairline with no recession) to NW7 (a horseshoe of hair at the sides and back). Stages 1-2 are normal adult hairlines; NW3 is conventionally the first stage called balding. What is the Norwood scale?

Mature hairline or receding - how does the tool tell?
By pattern and depth. A mature hairline moves the whole line up slightly and evenly (roughly NW1.5-2) and keeps the temples filled; recession that's headed further typically shows deeper, more V-shaped temple loss ahead of the mid-forehead line. One photo is a snapshot, not a trajectory - which is why the honest way to know is comparing scores from identical photos months apart.
What photo gives the best result?
Hair pulled back or off the forehead, even indoor lighting, camera at eye level, and ideally a second run with a top-down crown photo. Fringes, wet hair, backlighting and low-resolution selfies all reduce accuracy - the confidence score tells you how readable your photo actually was.
Is this a medical diagnosis?
No. It describes the visible pattern in one photo - it cannot examine hair-shaft miniaturization, distinguish causes of thinning, or replace a dermatologist. If your result flags an unusual pattern, or you're concerned about active loss, see a dermatologist or hair-loss specialist; sudden or patchy loss in particular deserves professional evaluation.
Can hair loss be reversed?
Clinically proven treatment options exist and work best started early - but they're a conversation for a doctor, not a scoring tool, and we deliberately don't recommend or name treatments.
