Honey Blonde Hair: Which Skin Tones It Flatters, Which It Yellows and the Level to Ask For

Honey blonde is a level 7 to 8 blonde with a gold base and a hint of amber, the blonde that looks like it has been in the sun rather than in a bowl. On warm and neutral-warm skin it adds glow because the gold in the hair repeats the gold in the complexion. On cool pink skin the same gold sits next to the pink and both read as yellow, so champagne or beige blonde is the better request there. On olive-warm medium skin it is one of the best colours available, as long as it is painted through rather than applied to the whole head. The rule: Honey blonde suits warm and neutral-warm skin at level 7 to 8 with a gold base, while cool pink skin should ask for champagne or beige instead.

Honey, golden or caramel: where each sits on the chart

These three are often used interchangeably but they differ in depth and in how much amber sits under the gold. Pick by how light you want to go and how much warmth your skin can match.

Golden blonde (level 8 to 9, clear gold base)

The lightest and brightest of the three. Pure gold with no brown underneath. Suits fair warm skin and Light or True Springs. On medium or deep skin it can look stripped rather than sunlit.

Honey blonde (level 7 to 8, gold with amber)

Gold with a drop of warm brown in it, which is what gives honey its richness. The most wearable warm blonde because the amber keeps it from going yellow. Suits fair to medium warm and neutral-warm skin.

Caramel (level 6 to 7, golden brown)

Technically a light brown with a strong gold glow. The right warm blonde for medium and olive-warm skin that would look washed out at level 8. Also the usual root colour under a honey balayage.

Who honey blonde suits and who it does not

Gold next to gold glows. Gold next to pink turns both yellow. That one sentence covers most of the decisions below.

Warm undertones (golden, peach, yellow)

Honey blonde is your blonde. Fair warm skin can go to level 8, medium warm skin looks best at level 7 with a caramel root so the hair does not out-light the face.

Neutral undertones

Yes, with a slightly beige lean. Ask for honey-beige rather than pure honey so the gold is softened. Neutral-warm skin can take it as is, neutral-cool should move toward champagne.

Cool undertones (pink, rosy, blue-based)

Honey next to pink skin reads yellow and can make the complexion look ruddy. Champagne, beige or pearl blonde gives the lightness without the gold. If you want a hint of warmth, a beige blonde with a few honey ribbons away from the face is the limit.

Olive undertones

Olive-warm medium skin looks exceptional in honey, but as a balayage over a caramel or light brown base, not a full head. Full honey on olive skin can look flat and slightly green, painted-through honey adds light exactly where the face needs it. Olive-cool skin should look at champagne or a neutral bronde instead.

Deep skin

Honey works as dimension rather than base colour. Honey and caramel ribbons through a warm dark brown give the sun-lit effect without lifting the whole head to level 8, which keeps the hair in better condition.

Honey blonde by colour season

Warm and light is Spring, warm and soft is Autumn. Honey blonde serves both but at different levels and with different amounts of amber.

Light Spring

Honey at level 8, kept light and clear. The season is delicate, so avoid the deeper amber versions and keep the root soft rather than dark.

True Spring

The home season. Honey or golden blonde at level 7 to 8 with a clear gold base. Bright, sunny and saturated suits you more than muted.

Soft Autumn

Honey softened with beige at level 7 or a caramel-honey blend. The muted skin looks best with a blonde that has a little brown in it rather than pure gold.

True Autumn

Caramel-honey or honey ribbons through a warm chestnut. Full honey can be too light for the richness of this season, so use it as dimension.

Summers and Winters

Cool seasons. Honey yellows them, so look at champagne, beige blonde or ash bronde for the light option that suits your palette.

Levels, root smudge and why brass is a feature here

Honey blonde is the easiest blonde to live with, mostly because the thing that ruins ash blonde is the thing honey is made of. When lightened hair fades, the gold and amber underneath come forward. On an ash blonde that is brass. On a honey blonde that is just more honey.

The other half of the low maintenance is the root. A root smudge or shadow root in caramel or light brown, blended an inch or two down from the scalp, means regrowth disappears into the design and you can stretch appointments to ten or twelve weeks. Ask for honey painted as a balayage over a level 6 caramel smudge and the colour will look better at week eight than most full-head blondes look at week two.

On levels: honey lives at 7 to 8. Push it to 9 and it becomes golden blonde, which needs more lifting and suits fewer skin tones. Keep it at 6 and it becomes caramel, which is often the better call for medium and olive-warm skin. Tell your colourist the level as well as the name and you will get the shade you pictured.

Frequently asked

Does honey blonde suit cool skin tones?

Usually not, because the gold in honey sits next to the pink in cool skin and both read as yellow. Champagne, beige or pearl blonde gives cool skin the lightness without the gold cast.

What level is honey blonde?

Level 7 to 8 with a gold base and a hint of amber. Level 9 is golden blonde, level 6 is caramel. Giving your colourist the level as well as the name avoids most mismatches.

Is honey blonde high maintenance?

It is the lowest maintenance blonde. Fade brings out gold and amber, which only makes honey look more like honey. With a caramel root smudge you can stretch appointments to ten or twelve weeks.

Can olive skin wear honey blonde?

Olive-warm medium skin looks exceptional in it, but as a balayage painted through a caramel or light brown base rather than a full head. Full honey on olive skin can look flat, painted-through honey adds light where the face needs it.

Can I preview honey blonde on my own photo?

Yes. The free Hair Colour Try-On blends Honey Golden Blonde, Champagne Blonde and Warm Caramel Brown onto your photo in the browser, each tagged warm, cool or neutral, so you can see whether honey glows or yellows on your own skin before booking.

Hair colour for Warm Undertones

Keep the hair's base tone on the same side as the skin: gold, honey, copper and caramel for warm undertones, never ash or platinum.

Hair colour for Cool Undertones

Keep the hair's base tone cool: ash, pearl, violet or blue based shades for cool undertones, never orange copper or golden blonde.

Hair colour for Neutral Undertones

Match the hair to your depth and contrast rather than a temperature, then soften the extremes: beige blonde not platinum or gold, soft black not blue-black, chestnut not orange copper.

Hair colour for Olive Skin

Choose rich, saturated shades with a clear red, neutral or blue base and avoid anything ashy, mousy or yellow that echoes the green-grey cast in the skin.

Platinum Blonde hair

Platinum suits cool and neutral-cool undertones with either very light or very high contrast colouring. The tone you ask for (ice versus beige) should follow your undertone exactly.

Copper hair

Copper belongs to warm undertones and the depth should follow the skin: strawberry for pale, true copper for medium, auburn copper for deep, with cool skin taking a cherry-leaning copper and olive skin taking deep auburn instead of orange.

Jet Black hair

Blue-black for cool or deep olive skin, brown-based off-black for warm skin and nothing darker than espresso on very fair warm skin.

Ash Brown hair

Ash brown belongs on cool or neutral-cool skin, warm skin should pick a neutral chocolate and olive skin should avoid true ash altogether.

Burgundy hair

Burgundy is a cool red, so it belongs on cool or deep skin, while warm skin should ask for cherry cola or mahogany with a brown base underneath.

Chocolate Brown hair

Match the chocolate's temperature to your undertone and its depth to your skin depth, then keep the base neutral so it never tips muddy or grey.

Strawberry Blonde hair

Strawberry blonde is for light warm skin at level 8 to 9, cool pink skin should look at champagne and anyone with medium or deeper skin should step up to copper.
